Subscription Exchange
September 30, 2000: If you live in North America and want to subscribe to Nyckelharpan, the newsletter of the Swedish Nyckelharpa Association (Föreningen Nyckelharpan, FN), it's kind of a pain to get the money to them. We here can't access the Swedish PlusGiro system (FN's PlusGiro number is 4918294-2) without incurring huge fees. It's also hard for Swedes who want to subscribe to Nyckel Notes, the newsletter of the American Nyckelharpa Association.
Perhaps the ANA can help match Swedes with North Americans, so you can exchange subscriptions. The Swede pays for his/her own subscription to Nyckelharpan and yours, and you pay for two subscriptions to Nyckel Notes. Just look up the current exchange rate for 150 SEK and pay that amount in USD to the ANA in the name of the Swede (fill out an application form for them). The Swede will then put 150 SEK in the FN PlusGiro account in your name. (Technically, it only costs 125 SEK per year for FN, but the extra 25 SEK is to pay the extra international postage costs.)

Subsidies for Local Workshops
May 2000: In an effort to help nyckelharpa players across North America take advantage of visiting Swedes, the ANA announces a standard policy of subsidies for workshops. We've already subsidized a few workshops and concerts over the years, but we felt it was time to formalize and announce the program. Here are the rules:
- The teacher must be a visiting Swede, not a local.
- It must be a workshop with at least 2 students, not a private lesson.
- The workshop must be open to the public, not solely for a private group or club.
- The workshop should be about 2 1/2 to 3 hours long.
- The subject of the workshop must be primarily nyckelharpa.
- The ANA will contribute enough to bring the price per person down to $20, to a maximum of $100.
- Only 1 workshop per major Metropolitan/Geographic area will be subsidized per year.
- The ANA will subsidize a maximum of 5 workshops per year.
This means that if you have 5 nyckelharpa players in your area and a visiting Swede wants $200 for a workshop, each of you will only have to pay $20, not $40, for the 3-hour group session.
To apply for the subsidy, contact the ANA at info@nyckelharpa.org.
Stolen Nyckelharpa
September 1998: On 24 Aug 1998 at about 4:00 pm, one of Ceylon Wallin's nyckelharpas was stolen from Birgitta Wallins shop in Gamla Stan, Stockholm. Ceylon was one of the most colorful figures in Uppland folk music, and was featured on the famous stamp from the 1970's.
The nyckelharpa was built in 1984 by Ceylon himself, has a light-colored finish, and has the text "Ceylon Wallin" scribed on the keybox cover. Inside, on the bottom, is the text "Ceylon Wallin 1984". The strap is green and white. It has 17 strings, probably with chrome-plated fine-tuners rather than brass.
Only one nyckelharpa made by Ceylon has ever been sold. Paul Krings purchased one from Henry and Birgitta Wallin in December of 1998. Its description is identical to the stolen one. If you see one for sale other than Paul's, it must be the stolen one.
Keep a look-out for this nyckelharpa! If you hear of it or see it, contact either the police, Birgitta Wallin at +46-8-102500, or Bart Brashers at bart.brashers@nyckelharpa.org.
Spread the word!
